Children With Matches Blamed in Fire

Share

Los Angeles County firefighters said that two children playing with matches started a small brush fire last week in La Canada Flintridge that burned about one acre and slightly damaged a house.

The fire began at 4 p.m. Friday near St. Katherine and Monarch drives in Chevy Chase Canyon and was extinguished about 25 minutes later by two water-dropping helicopters and five engine crews, said Capt. Rick Guerrero of the La Canada Fire Station. He said the station responded with heavier than usual manpower because of the fear that the dead brush in nearby hills would ignite and burn out of control.

Guerrero said the fire burned one of the eaves of a house and caused $50 in damage. He declined to give the ages of the children who started the fire but said they were given a stern talk and a warning by fire officials and released to their parents.
