The driver of a Southern California Rapid Transit District bus was charged in connection with an accident in which 19 passengers suffered minor injuries. The accident occurred when the front of the bus was clipped by a slow-moving freight train at a South Gate crossing. The driver, Floyd Cornelius Covington, 50, was charged by the district attorney’s office with failure to stop at least 15 feet from the tracks. Covington had already been suspended for 30 days without pay by the RTD, and a spokesman said he will have to undergo retraining before he can drive for the system again. The violation with which Covington is charged carries a maximum fine of $100.
