Pfezting Wins Scratch Main Event

Robert Pfezting of Garden Grove won the scratch main event Friday night in the fifth qualifying round for the U.S. Speedway Motorcycle Championships before 6,104 at the Orange Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

The victory earned Pfezting 20 points and leaves him in second place among a field of 32 riders who are competing for the 13 spots in the U.S. championship final, which will be held Oct. 11 at Costa Mesa. The final qualifying race is scheduled for tonight at Victorville.

Pfezting has 103 overall points. Colton’s Mike Faria, who was second in the scratch main Friday night, leads all qualifiers with 120 points.

Steve Lucero of Riverside was third in the scratch main and is third in the field of 32 with 67 overall points. John Sandona of Riche Canyon was fourth Friday and is fourth overall with 63 points.
