Local News in Brief : 3,000-Acre Burn Sends Up Signals of Alarm

Share

For the second straight day, Los Angeles County fire crews monitored a 3,000-acre controlled burn in the mountains south of Valencia that threw up smoke visible across the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys.

Dispatchers reported a stream of phone calls by residents anxious at the sight of smoke during fire season.

Thursday’s burn was centered in a 100-acre “island” of explosively dry brush in Pico Canyon untouched by Wednesday’s fire, fire Capt. David Moore said.

The first day of the burn caused a disruption of power at Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park, forcing evacuation of five rides. Park officials said there was no similar problem Thursday.

There were no injuries or property damage, authorities said.
