A tractor-trailer rig blew a tire, hit a car and then tipped across the center divider of the Harbor Freeway on Saturday. The driver of the truck was killed, the driver of the auto was badly injured, and both sides of the freeway were closed for hours in the afternoon and early evening.
The driver of the truck, whose name was withheld pending notification of his family, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the auto, Jorge Turcios, 27, was taken to Martin Luther King-Drew Medical Center, where he was in critical condition with head injuries, administrative nurse Gussie Baker said.
The accident occured near the El Segundo Boulevard interchange about 10 miles south of downtown.
Hazardous materials teams from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and California Department of Transportation were working to clean up about 7,000 gallons of lubricating oil that spilled when the tractor-trailer overturned, Gonzalez said.
