The State - News from Sept. 1, 1986
A Marine skydiver was reported in satisfactory condition after a parachuting accident at the opening football game for the University of Nevada-Reno and California State University, Fullerton. Staff Sgt. Richard Scriven, 28, stationed at the Pickle Meadows mountain warfare training camp near Bridgeport, Calif., lost control of his chute and hit the ground at the football stadium in Reno at an estimated 15- to-30 m.p.h. Scriven was carrying the game ball and was supposed to land on the 50 yard line. But he lost control as he was trying to twist and maneuver his chute about 150 feet above the ground. He landed on the turf off-balance and was knocked unconscious. Paul Stuart, sports information director for Nevada-Reno, said the accident stunned the crowd of more than 13,000. “They were really up for the game and after he hit there was about 20 minutes of pure silence while medical attendants worked on him.”
