PCAA Roundup : Sweeney Has 2 Scoring Bombs as Fresno State Breezes, 55-2

Quarterback Kevin Sweeney completed two long bombs for touchdowns and ran for another score Saturday night as Fresno State walloped Montana State, 55-2, at Fresno and extended the nation’s longest unbeaten streak to 13 games.

Wide receiver/kick returner Stephen Baker and tailback James Williams each scored two touchdowns in the nonconference season opener for both teams.

Sweeney passed for 332 yards, moving up to ninth on the NCAA career passing list with 8,592 yards.

His three-yard scoring run early in the first quarter began the Bulldog onslaught. Sweeney’s touchdown passes covered 80 yards to Baker and 60 yards to Brock Smith.

Baker scored on a 14-yard reverse and an 84-yard punt return. Williams rushed for 106 yards on just 9 carries and had scoring runs of 35 and 1 yard. Kicker Barry Belli added field goals of 42 and 54 yards.

The victory was the ninth in a row for PCAA champion Fresno State, the only undefeated Division I-A team in the nation last year at 11-0-1.

Pacific 31, Cal State Sacramento 7--Hue Jackson threw for one touchdown, ran for another and directed a wishbone attack that piled up 344 yards rushing as the Tigers routed Cal State Sacramento in a nonconference game at Stockton.
