Midwest Roundup : Miami of Ohio Routs Ball St.

Chris Thomas returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a score, Tom Graham rushed for three touchdowns and George Swarn scored twice and set a school record for career rushing yards as Miami of Ohio defeated Ball State, 45-7, in a Mid-American Conference game Saturday at Oxford, Ohio.

Miami led, 28-0, at the end of the first quarter and 38-0 at halftime.

Swarn, who scored on a 55-yard pass play and a one-yard run, rushed for 77 yards in 21 carries to surpass the Miami career mark of 3,118 yards, set by Bob Hitchens in the early 1970s. Swarn has 3,137 yards.

The game was the season opener for Miami of Ohio. Ball State is 1-1.

Kent St. 18, Toledo 16--Larry Steinberg kicked a 23-yard field goal with four seconds left to give the Golden Flashes a Mid-American Conference victory at Kent, Ohio.

Toledo had rallied for 13 fourth-quarter points to take the lead before Steinberg’s field goal made Glen Mason’s debut as the Golden Flashes’ head coach a success. The Rockets, who lost to Florida State last week, are 0-2.

Wichita St. 69, San Francisco St. 6--Valasco Smith rushed for a school-record five touchdowns while gaining 193 yards in 19 carries to help the Shockers win at Wichita, Kan.

It was the most points scored by the Shockers since a 69-7 victory over Emporia State in 1954. Wichita State scored on 10 of its 14 possessions.

Tulsa 51, Tennessee Tech 0--At Tulsa, Eric Brown caught six passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns as the Golden Hurricane evened its record at 1-1. It was the season opener for the Golden Eagles.
