Dwight Evans homered twice, and Marty Barrett’s two-run double capped a three-run Boston rally in the seventh inning as the Red Sox defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 7-5, at Baltimore Tuesday night, extending their winning streak to 10.

Playing their first game after Manager Earl Weaver’s announced retirement at the end of the season became official, the Orioles lost for the 14th time in 17 games.

Evans began the Boston seventh with a homer, a drive that finished rookie starter John Habyan. Rich Gedman drew a one-out walk off Rich Bordi (5-3) and moved to second on a fielding error by third baseman Floyd Rayford. Wade Boggs struck out for the first time in 59 at-bats, but Barrett drove home both runners with a drive into the left-field corner.

Evans has 17 of his 22 homers and 54 of his 88 RBIs on the road, and three of his four homers in Baltimore have come in the last two games. He is hitting .467 against the Orioles, with 14 hits in 30 at-bats.

“To me, this is the best hitting ballpark,” Evans said of Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium. “It’s the best maintained, the lights are good and the background is good. It’s fun to play here.”

Evans hit his 22nd homer with two out in the eighth for an insurance run, and Oriole pinch-hitter Juan Beniquez hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning off Bob Stanley. Bill Buckner restored Boston’s two-run cushion in the ninth with a two-out RBI single.

Don Baylor hit a solo homer, his 28th, in the Boston second, and scored on a single by Tony Armas after opening the fifth with a double.

Milwaukee 3, Detroit 1-- Ted Higuera won his 18th game as the Brewers beat the Tigers at Detroit.

Higuera (18-9) didn’t allow a hit until the fourth. He worked seven innings, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out seven to beat Detroit’s Frank Tanana (10-7), who allowed five hits in 7 innings.

Dan Plesac pitched the final two outs in relief of John Henry Johnson for his 12th save.

New York 3, Toronto 1--Mike Easler hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie at Toronto as the Yankees handed the Blue Jays their fourth loss in the last six games.

Toronto has hit .166 in its last five games and scored only 11 runs.

Ron Guidry (7-10), who had one loss and four no-decisions in his last five starts, allowed five hits in seven innings for his first win since Aug. 6.

Dave Righetti went the final two innings to earn his 36th save, breaking the single-season Yankee record of 35 set in 1972 by Sparky Lyle.

Don Mattingly went 3 for 4 to raise his average to .342. Mattingly also scored two runs.

Chicago 4, Oakland 1--Tony La Russa returned to Comiskey Park for the first time since he was fired as manager of the White Sox on June 20. He took over as A’s manager on July 7 after Jackie Moore was fired.

But the White Sox spoiled La Russa’s homecoming, breaking the A’s two-game winning streak.

Ron Hassey had three hits, including only his third triple since 1980, and scored twice.

Joe Cowley (9-9) had a two-hit shutout through five innings, then survived a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. Cowley struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter over seven innings.

The losing pitcher was Dave Stewart (9-2), ending his five-game winning streak. He gave up nine hits and one walk in 6 innings.

Seattle 3, Texas 1--Edwin Nunez, making his first start since 1983, allowed three hits in five scoreless innings, and Jim Presley hit a two-run homer as the Mariners beat the Rangers at Arlington, Tex.

Nunez (1-1) had appeared in six games before Tuesday night, all in relief, and had pitched only seven innings.

Kansas City 11, Minnesota 3--Jamie Quirk hit a two-run home run, and rookie Kevin Seitzer drove in three runs at Kansas City as the Royals handed the Twins their fifth straight loss.

Mark Gubicza, with relief help from Steve Farr, won for the ninth time in his last 11 decisions.

Quirk’s homer in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie as the Royals won their third in a row. It was Quirk’s fifth straight hit over two games.

Kansas City rookie Bo Jackson scored his first major league run in the sixth inning on Willie Wilson’s fourth single of the game. Jackson had two hits and his first major league stolen base in the game.
