Kansas missed two field-goal attempts in the first quarter and its offense, with junior Mike Orth at quarterback, was unable to overcome five turnovers.

The Jayhawks tried 22 passes in the first half and moved into North Carolina territory four of the six times they had the ball in the first two quarters but came away with two missed field goals and the two interceptions by Wike.

In the second half, Kansas crossed midfield four times, fumbling the first three times and having time run out on the fourth.

Tulsa 27, Oklahoma St. 23--At Tulsa, tailback Derrick Ellison rushed for 184 yards, and Steve Gage’s 73-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Kelley triggered a second-quarter scoring burst that lifted the Golden Hurricane to victory before a record Skelley Stadium crowd of 41,235.

Taking advantage of four turnovers, Tulsa, an independent, ran its record to 2-1. Oklahoma State of the Big Eight Conference dropped to 1-1.

Tulsa trailed, 10-3, after a 4-yard run by Thurman Thomas but struck back 23 seconds later, when Kelley made a fingertip catch on the 73-yard pass play.

Missouri 24, Utah St. 10--At Columbia, Mo., Darrell Wallace rushed for 138 yards and scored 2 touchdowns to pace the Tigers.

Wallace, who carried 22 times, led a ground game that produced 230 yards.

The victory allowed the Tigers (1-0) to match last year’s total of one victory. Missouri was 1-10 in 1985.

The Tigers forced the Aggies (0-2) to minus-10 yards rushing in 23 carries.

Northern Iowa 17, Kansas St. 0--At Manhattan, Kan., Carl Boyd and Errol Peebles both scored on short runs, and the Panthers allowed the Wildcats to cross midfield just twice.

It was the second straight year that Division I-AA Northern Iowa (1-0-1) had beaten the Big Eight Conference Wildcats on their home field. Last season, the Panthers won, 10-6.
