PCAA Roundup : Jones Leads Las Vegas Over Portland St., 51-14
Kirk Jones rushed for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns Saturday night to lead Nevada Las Vegas to a 51-14 romp over Portland State in a nonconference game at Las Vegas.
The Rebels scored on four of their first five possessions to take a 27-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
The victory evened UNLV’s record at 1-1. Portland State dropped to 0-2.
The Rebels rolled up 493 yards total offense, with quarterbacks Steve Stallworth and Eugene Bowen combining to pass for 232 yards. Stallworth connected on 11 of 17 attempts for 152 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown to Chris Bridges.
Texas El Paso 47, New Mexico St. 33--The Miners scored two touchdowns in the final 47 seconds to defeat the Aggies in a nonconference game at Las Cruces, N.M.
Senior quarterback Sammy Garza ran 6 yards to cap a 68-yard drive and break a 33-33 tie with 47 seconds left, and then Nicky Combs added a 4-yard scoring run with 4 seconds left.
The victory gave UTEP a 2-1 record under first-year Coach Bob Stull. New Mexico State of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. is 1-2.
Garza’s passing and the running of sophomore tailback John Harvey helped UTEP build a 33-17 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but New Mexico State came back with 16 points to make it 33-33 with 2:09 left.
