Despite another record-setting day by Melissa Sutton, the Westlake High girls cross-country team scored a 25-31 upset over second-ranked Newbury Park on Thursday in a Marmonte League double-dual meet at Westlake.

Sutton, who set her third straight course record, ran the three-mile course in 17:22. Her two previous course records came at the Woodbridge Invitational and the Santa Barbara Lagoon Invitational.

The key to Westlake’s victory was the team’s depth; five runners finished in the top eight. Jennifer Feller ran behind Sutton, placing second in 18:43. Junior Desiree Joubert finished fourth in 19:26, Jamie Butler finished fifth in 19:43 and Carolyn Feller, Jennifer’s sister, finished sixth in 19:47.
