Alfred Jenkins completed 19 of 28 passes for 233 yards, and David Adams rushed for more than 100 yards for the third consecutive week as 17th-ranked Arizona defeated Oregon, 41-17, Saturday at Eugene, Ore., in a Pacific 10 opener for both teams.

Adams, a 5-foot-6 tailback, carried 31 times. He had 101 of his 130 yards by halftime as Arizona (3-0 overall) built a 24-7 lead.

Oregon (2-1) rallied behind the passing and running of quarterback Chris Miller to pull within 14 points in the second half but could get no closer as Arizona safety Chuck Cecil intercepted two Miller passes in the final quarter.

Miller threw two touchdown passes, the first an 11-yarder to Jan Cespedes on the Ducks’ first possession to give Oregon a 7-0 lead.

But Jenkins, from Lynwood, directed the Wildcats on scoring drives of 81, 77 and 77 yards to put Arizona in control at 21-7. The scores came on a 1-yard run by Chris McElmore, a 20-yard pass from Jenkins to Jon Horton and a 2-yard run by Adams.

Miller completed 17 of 31 passes for 185 yards and joined Dan Fouts as the only Oregon players to surpass 5,000 yards in total offense.

California 31, Washington St. 21--Reserve running back William Jackson recovered a teammate’s fumble for one touchdown and ran 10 yards for another as the Bears beat the Cougars at Berkeley in another Pac-10 opener.

Quarterback Brian Bedford added a scoring pass and his third rushing touchdown of the season as the Bears (1-1) scored on four of their first five possessions. Washington State fell to 1-2.

Jackson, a sophomore from St. Bernard High in Playa del Rey who had not touched the ball in Cal’s season-opening loss to Boston College, got the Bears in front Saturday by falling on tailback Marc Hicks’ fumble in the end zone.

Cal scored twice more in the first quarter on a six-yard bootleg by Bedford and Jackson’s second touchdown.

The Bears made it 28-0 midway through the second quarter when Majett Whiteside blocked a quick kick by Timm Rosenbach for a safety, and Bedford threw four yards to tight end Don Noble for a touchdown.

Stanford 28, San Jose St. 10--Fullback Brad Muster ran for 2 touchdowns while gaining 141 total yards, quarterback John Paye completed 25 of 45 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown and safety Brad Humphreys scored on an interception as the Cardinal beat the Spartans at Stanford.

Stanford (2-0) is off to its best start since 1980 and leads the series with San Jose State, 35-7-1. The Spartans, who were intercepted four times and fumbled three times, dropped to 1-2.

Arizona St. 30, Southern Methodist 0--Darryl Harris, who rushed for 119 yards, scored on a 22-yard run, and cornerback Anthony Parker returned a punt 65 yards for another touchdown as the 18th-ranked Sun Devils beat the error-prone Mustangs in a nonconference game at Tempe, Ariz.

A penalty on SMU, for running into Sun Devil kicker Kent Bostrom on a 28-yard field goal try, kept alive a drive that led to Jeff Van Raaphorst’s 2-yard touchdown pass to fullback Darin Tupper that made it 7-0.
