Big Ten Roundup : Northwestern Upsets Army, 25-18

Northwestern Coach Francis Peay borrowed Army’s attack to outmaneuver the Cadets and help the Wildcats to a 25-18 upset Saturday at Evanston, Ill.

Peay, who recorded his first victory as the Wildcats’ coach, relied on a ball-control, rush-oriented attack to end Northwestern’s six-game losing streak dating back to last year. The loss evened the Cadets’ mark at 1-1.

Brian Nuffer led Northwestern’s rushing attack, recording a career-high 173 yards in 25 carries, and scored on a 1-yard run early in the third quarter.

Pittsburgh 41, Purdue 26--At West Lafayette, Ind., the Panthers found the Boilermakers’ weakness early and took advantage of freshman quarterback Jeff George’s mistakes.

George, the nation’s top high school player last year, passed for 264 yards and 2 touchdowns, but he had 5 passes intercepted, 2 of which were returned for Pitt touchdowns.

The Panthers (1-1-1) totaled 117 return yards on the interceptions.

Ohio State 13, Colorado 10--Freshman Pat O’Morrow kicked a 19-yard field goal, set up by a controversial defensive pass interference call, to give the Buckeyes the victory in a nonconference game at Columbus, Ohio.

With the victory, Ohio State (1-2) escaped becoming the first Buckeye team in 97 years to go winless through its first three games.

Colorado (0-3) had tied the game at 10-10 on a 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mark Hatcher to split end Lance Carl with 5:21 remaining.

Ohio State took over on its 20 and, with quarterback Jim Karsatos hitting 3 of 4 passes for 42 yards, marched downfield.

But the Buckeyes were faced with a third-and-14 situation at the Colorado 23 with 1:43 left. Karsatos’ pass over the middle to Jamie Holland at the Colorado 8 was high and fell incomplete, but pass interference was signaled.

Colorado Coach Bill McCartney walked on the field to argue the call, but Ohio State ended up with a first down at the Buffalo eight.

After three running plays moved the ball to the two, O’Morrow converted the field goal to give Ohio State the winning points.

Indiana 52, Navy 29--At Bloomington, Ind., Dave Kramme passed for 3 touchdowns and 308 yards to lead the Hoosiers to a rout of the Midshipmen.

The Hoosiers improved to 2-0 with their largest point total since the 1969 season opener, a 58-30 victory over Kentucky. Navy fell to 1-1.

Nevada Las Vegas 17, Wisconsin 7--Steve Stallworth threw for 163 yards and 1 touchdown, and the Rebel defense did the rest, holding the Badgers scoreless in the final three quarters before a record home crowd of 32,207 at Las Vegas.

The upset win, which avenged a 26-23 loss in Madison, Wis., last year, put UNLV’s record at 2-1. Wisconsin is 1-2.

Iowa 57, Northern Illinois 3--Running back Rick Bayless, playing for the injured Kevin Harmon, had 167 yards and 2 touchdowns in 8 carries as the Hawkeyes defeated the Huskies in a nonconference game at Iowa City.

Bayless ran 87 and 5 yards for two of Iowa’s first three touchdowns in the first half. He had 1 carry for 13 yards in the second half.

Iowa improved its record to 2-0, while Northern Illinois fell to 0-4.
