Hanauer and Kropfeld Qualify for Hydroplane Final
Chip Hanauer and Jim Kropfeld, the two contenders for the national unlimited hydroplane championship, qualified Friday for Sunday’s final in the $150,000 Budweiser Las Vegas Silver Cup race.
On a windy day, when the winning boat in last Sunday’s San Diego race sank, Hanauer qualified Miller American at 111.98 m.p.h. despite earlier fuel-line problems.
Kropfeld, driving Miss Budweiser, managed a more respectable 134.59 m.p.h. for one lap on the 2 1/2-mile Lake Mead course.
Ron Armstrong, 45, of Lakewood, Calif., escaped wet but unharmed when his boat went down in an estimated 90 feet of water.
