FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : CSUN Soccer Team Edges San Jose State, Advances
John Tronson and Thor Lee each scored a goal to lead Cal State Northridge to a 2-1 victory Friday over San Jose State in the first round of the Westmont College soccer tournament.
Tronson scored on an assist from fellow co-captain Mike McAndrew. Lee was assisted by Rodney Batt.
Tronson’s goal, his third this season, brings his career total to within seven of the CSUN record of 45, set by Jose Perez from 1981-84. With 18 more points, Tronson would break the school point record, 108, also set by Perez.
CSUN (4-2-1), ranked No. 10 in Division II, will play Grand Canyon College or Westmont today at 3 p.m.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Notre Dame def. Providence, 15-13, 15-4, 15-12--Tracy Benn led Notre Dame to the nonleague victory, serving for 12 points. Kristin Borella and Andrea Banducci each had four kills for Notre Dame (6-1).
Louisville def. Flintridge Sacred Heart, 15-3, 15-7, 15-7--Louisville’s Teal Corbeil, normally a reserve, passed and hit effectively in the nonleague victory. Louisville’s Tina Kohler, a first-team all-league selection last season, had 16 kills.
Burroughs def. Miraleste, 15-10, 7-15, 15-11, 15-11--Burroughs’ Mary Ann Wagner had 23 kills and four blocks in the nonleague victory at Miraleste. Teammates Karin Knoop and Kim Powers both had nine kills.
MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY
Oxnard 20, Pierce 35; Glendale 16, Pierce 39; Moorpark 26, Pierce 29--Chris Pressman of Moorpark finished sixth in the four-way meet at Oxnard. Pressman, a freshman from Simi Valley, ran 21:45 over the four-mile course.
Damon Lymer was Pierce’s first finish, placing seventh in 21:46. Pressman’s teammate, Mike Barton, finished ninth in 21:52.
