Lance Is a Standout as a Stand-In for Reseda

With an offense led by a fill-in quarterback, Reseda Coach Joel Schaeffer figured his team might suffer some this season.

Two games into the season, however, his worries appear over. Any suffering has been done only by opposing offenses.

Backup quarterback Mike Lance, filling in for injured starter Don Grant, made the most of his few passing opportunities and junior tailback Ronald Wilkinson scored two touchdowns and rushed for 122 yards to lead Reseda over out-manned Monroe, 27-0, in a nonleague game.

“I think Wilkinson is a sleeper,” Schaeffer said. “He could gain a lot of yards if I gave him the ball the more.”

While Wilkinson was running wild over Monroe, Reseda’s defense was blanking the Vikings, holding them without a first down for the entire game.

The Regent defense has allowed only seven points this season, a big reason for their 2-0 start. Monroe, which has yet to score in 1986, is 0-2.

Reseda limited Monroe to minus-26 yards in the first half. Monroe also contributed to the cause, losing 40 yards in first-half penalties alone.

Reseda jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when Wilkinson returned a Monroe punt 40 yards to the Viking six. Two plays later, Keith Preyer scored on a three-yard run.

Wilkinson later scored the second Reseda touchdown, capping a 36-yard, 11-play drive by the Regents. The Reseda running back scored from three yards out with only 1:13 left in the first half to give the Regents a 14-0 lead at intermission.

Wilkinson, an all-league selection last season as a sophomore, scored the third Reseda touchdown on a 68-yard sweep in the third quarter, giving the Regents a 21-0 advantage. The run capped a two-play, 70-yard drive.

Reseda running back Chris Vargas scored the final touchdown on a three-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.
