Navratilova, Bassett Will Play in Chicago
Top-ranked Martina Navratilova and Canadian Carling Bassett have accepted invitations to compete in the Virginia Slims of Chicago tennis tournament scheduled for Nov. 10-16, a spokesman for the event said.
Navratilova already has won nine tournaments in 1986, including the Wimbledon and U.S. Open crowns, to raise her total Grand Slam triumphs to 15.
Navratilova, the No. 1 ranked woman player in the world, comes to Chicago seeking to add the $33,000 first-prize purse to her more than $10 million in career earnings.
Bassett, ranked No. 17 this year, already has earned more than $82,000 this year in singles and doubles play.
