College Roundup : San Jose St. Tops Titans in Volleyball

The No. 1-ranked San Jose State women’s volleyball team defeated Cal State Fullerton, 15-0, 15-4, 16-14, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. match Saturday at Fullerton.

The Titans fell to 0-3 in conference, 6-11 overall. The Spartans are 2-0 and 10-0.

Shawna DiBiaso led San Jose State with 12 kills. Wendy Knapp led Fullerton with four kills.

In other college volleyball:

La Jolla Invitational Tournament--Janet Jenson had 13 kills to lead Chapman (7-8) to a 14-16, 15-2, 15-12 victory in the third-place match at UC San Diego. Earlier Saturday, the Panthers defeated La Verne 13-15, 15-9, 15-7, in their final pool play match, and lost to UC San Diego, 15-8, 7-15, 13-15, in the semifinals.

St. Mary’s 3, Southern California College 0--St. Mary’s beat the 0-9 Vanguards, 15-1, 15-8 and 15-6 in a nonconference match in Moraga. SCC middle hitter Christy Woodburn recorded nine kills and five digs, and freshman teammate Kim Barrios had five blocks in her first college match.

In cross-country action:

Aztec Invitational--The UC Irvine women’s team finished second behind Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the 11-team event at San Diego’s Balboa Park. Cal Poly had 54 points, followed by the Anteaters with 88. UCI’s top performer was Beth McGrann, who came in fifth in 17:20 on the 5-kilometer course.

The UCI men’s cross-country team finished third among the 10 teams in its division. Arizona won with 37 points and Northern Arizona was second with 133. UCI had 138. Richard Graves was the Anteaters’ highest finisher, placing 15th in 30:50 on the 10,000-kilometer course. Both UCI teams will compete in the Stanford Invitational Saturday.

In women’s soccer action:

Cal State Long Beach 3, Chapman 1--Antonia Wolff and Gayle Provost scored to lead the 49ers (2-4-1) at Chapman (2-3-1). The 49ers took the lead nine minutes into the game when the ball bounced past Panther goalie Teri Schaub off two Chapman defenders. Susie Brown scored Chapman’s goal on a penalty kick at 49:47. Long Beach outshot Chapman, 30-10. Schaub made 13 saves.

In water polo action:

UC Irvine 10, Fresno State 8--Mike Halphide led the Anteaters with three goals in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. play at Fresno. Tom Warde and Dan Smoot contributed two goals each. UCI, ranked eighth nationally, raised its record to 5-3, 2-0. The Bulldogs dropped to 2-6, 0-2. UCI plays at Pacific today.

UC Riverside Tournament--Chapman (1-7) dropped three matches, losing to Whittier, 13-5, UC Riverside, 11-3, and Redlands 12-8. John Bristol had five goals in the three games to raise his season total to 20.
