Community College Roundup : Orange Coast Wins Water Polo Title

The Orange Coast College water polo team won the College of the Sequoias Tournament Saturday in Visalia by defeating Cuesta, 14-7. The Pirates (11-1) advanced to the title match by defeating Alan Hancock, 19-7, in the semifinals as OCC’s Curt Christensen scored four goals.

The Pirates play an Orange Empire match at Rancho Santiago Tuesday at 3 p.m.

In volleyball action:

Cypress College Tournament--Santa Barbara City College earned the championship by defeating Citrus, 15-3, 15-2, in the finals. Santa Barbara’s Becky Kofoed and Danna Lopuson had eight kills each. Cypress, led by outside hitter Kim O’Dowd and middle hitter Stephanie Lockhart, finished fifth among the eight teams. The Chargers beat Mt. San Antonio and Chaffey, and lost to Citrus and Glendale of Arizona Saturday.

College of the Sequoias 15, Bakersfield 10-- The victory gave College of the Sequoias the championship of the Rancho Santiago tournament Saturday. El Camino finished third in the tournament, Fullerton was fourth, followed by Grossmont, Mesa (Arizona), Orange Coast, Rancho Santiago, Kings River and San Diego Mesa.

In men’s soccer:

Cuyamaca College 3, Orange Coast 1--The victory gave Cuyamaca the Golden West Soccer Cup at Golden West. The host Rustlers (3-2) placed third behind OCC in the four-team tournament, beating Oxnard, 5-2, as Pat Penner and Robert Howerton scored two goals each.

In women’s soccer action:

Tiger Tournament--Golden West (4-2) lost to Claremont, 1-0, in the finals at Occidental College. Golden West reached the finals by beating Redlands, 5-0, in the semifinals as Shannon Augustine scored three goals and Connie Knapp and Hayle Wihongi each scored one. Golden West plays at Bakersfield College Tuesday.
