North Carolina State may have been 16-point underdogs, but quarterback Erik Kramer insisted that a 28-16 victory over 13th-ranked Maryland did not surprise the Wolfpack, which had lost six straight to the Terrapins and last won at College Park in 1970.

“This is no big shock,” Kramer said after N.C. State rallied for 21 points in the fourth quarter Saturday night.

“We believed when we came in here that we could win,” said Kramer, a senior from Canoga Park, Calif. “We executed well, we stuck to our game plan, and we made the big play when we had to.”

Maryland Coach Bobby Ross agreed: “It seemed like they made every big play they had to make. I thought we played hard. We just kept turning the ball over.”

Maryland lost three fumbles and two interceptions, and two of the turnovers led to N.C. State touchdowns.

Kramer, who passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, converted the final turnover with a one-yard touchdown run with 2:45 left.

The loss snapped the Terps’ 17-game Atlantic Coast Conference winning streak. N.C. State is unbeaten in two ACC games and 3-0-1 overall. Maryland is 3-1, 0-1.

Kramer, who completed 18 of 30 passes for 297 yards, threw an 18-yard scoring pass to Crite and hit Haywood Jeffires from 25 yards out for another touchdown.

Naz Worthen set an N.C. State record by gaining 187 yards in 9 receptions, 15 more than the mark set by Lee Jukes in a 1979 game against Auburn.

Dan Henning, the ACC’s top-rated passer, set two Maryland records with 27 completions in 54 attempts. He gained 300 yards passing but was intercepted twice.

Maryland lost star receiver Azizuddin Abdur-Ra’oof for the rest of the season with a torn left Achilles’ tendon.

Clemson 27, Georgia Tech 3--Terrance Roulhac set up a pair of first-half scores with kickoff returns of 81 and 39 yards in an ACC game at Atlanta that snapped the Yellow Jackets’ unbeaten string at eight games.

Fullback Tracy Johnson had a pair of one-yard touchdown runs for the Tigers (2-1), and David Treadwell added a 24-yard field goal to make it 17-3 at halftime.

Treadwell had a 29-yard field goal in the third period, and Chris Lancaster scored on a 10-yard run in the final period for the only scoring of the second half.

Tech (1-1-1), which had a 6-0-2 record since a 17-14 loss to Auburn on Oct. 19, 1985, managed only a 27-yard field gal by David Bell in the second period.
