Baseball Roundup : Mattingly (.350) Has Homer, 2 Doubles, 3 RBIs

Don Mattingly homered, hit two doubles and drove in three runs, raising his batting average to .350 as he helped the New York Yankees defeat the Detroit Tigers, 10-2, Sunday and salvage the final game of their three-game series in New York.

Mattingly, who had a 24-game hitting streak end Saturday, went 3 for 5 to move within two points of Boston’s Wade Boggs in the race for the American League batting title. Boggs went 1 for 4 in Boston’s 12-3 division-clinching win over Toronto, and his average fell a point to .352.

Mattingly hit his 29th homer in the first inning, a two-run shot to right-center off Bryan Kelly (0-2), to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. He then boosted New York’s advantage to 4-0 by capping a two-run second inning with a run-scoring double.

Mattingly increased his league-leading total for hits to 227, for doubles to 51, one short of Lou Gehrig’s Yankee record set in 1927, and for total bases to 369. He also has 108 RBIs and 82 extra-base hits.

Dave Winfield also homered and had three RBIs for the Yankees.

Cleveland 5, Seattle 4--Joe Carter reached on Jim Presley’s throwing error in the 12th inning, and Cory Snyder followed with a run-scoring single as the Indians beat the Mariners to sweep a three-game series at Seattle.

Mariner pitchers had a club-record 21 strikeouts in the game. Mark Langston struck out 14 in seven innings, Pete Ladd had 2 in one inning, Matt Young had 1 in two-thirds of an inning, and Edwin Nunez (1-2) had 4 in 3 innings.

The major league record is 26 by Oakland against California in 1971 in a 20-inning game.

Frank Wills (3-4) the fourth Cleveland pitcher, pitched 3 innings of no-hit relief, retiring all 11 batters he faced. Ernie Camacho got the final three outs for his 19th save.

Minnesota 6, Chicago White Sox 1--Gary Gaetti walked with the bases loaded to snap a 1-1 eighth-inning tie, and the Twins scored four more runs in a ninth inning highlighted by Mickey Hatcher’s two-run homer to break a four-game losing streak at Chicago.

Milwaukee 10, Baltimore 2--Charlie Moore singled, doubled, homered and scored twice, and the Brewers blew it open with seven runs in the eighth inning to beat the Orioles at Milwaukee. Dale Sveum drove in two of the Brewers’ runs with a bases-loaded walk in the first inning and an RBI single in the eighth.

Kansas City 6, Oakland 2-- George Brett, Frank White and Jamie Quirk hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning for the first hits off Dave Stewart as the Royals broke Oakland’s six-game winning streak at Kansas City.

Stewart began the inning by walking Kevin Seitzer, and Brett then hit his 16th home run to give the Royals a 2-0 lead. White followed with his 21st homer, and Quirk hit his seventh. It was the second time in Royals history they hit three consecutive home runs.

New York Mets 4, Pittsburgh 1--Darryl Strawberry’s three-run homer in the 11th inning led the Mets over the Pirates in Pittsburgh.

Rick Aguilera (9-7) earned the win with two innings of relief. He followed Bob Ojeda, who had a three-hit shutout until Jim Morrison tied the game with two outs in the ninth with his 22nd home run of the year.

Houston 2, Atlanta 0--Jim Deshaies, Aurelio Lopez, Charlie Kerfeld and Dave Smith combined on Houston’s fifth shutout in six games as the Astros won for the 10th time in their last 13 games. Atlanta has lost 5 of 6.

Deshaies (11-5) gave up five hits and a walk in five innings. Lopez pitched two innings of one-hit relief, then Kerfeld and Smith pitched an inning each. Smith got his 32nd save.

Philadelphia 5, Montreal 2--John Russell and Juan Samuel each drove in two runs as the Phillies beat the Expos in Montreal.

Kevin Gross (12-12) allowed seven hits before he was relieved by Steve Bedrosian with two runners on in the ninth. Gross walked two and struck out five. Bedrosian recorded the final three outs to tie the Phillies’ record of 29 saves, set by Al Holland in 1984.

St. Louis 4, Chicago Cubs 1--Terry Pendleton had three hits and scored two runs to lead the Cardinals over the Cubs at St. Louis.

St. Louis left-hander Greg Mathews allowed six hits over seven innings to improve to 11-8. He walked one and struck out three.

Todd Worrell threw the final two innings for his 36th save.

Cincinnati 6, San Diego 3--Ted Power allowed five hits over eight innings, and Dave Concepcion hit his 100th career home run as the Reds won their sixth straight game at San Diego.

Concepcion homered with the bases empty in the first inning. Power (9-6) also doubled in a run in Cincinnati’s three-run second, an inning that featured Kurt Stillwell stealing home on the front end of a double steal.
