An Oct. 16 readiness hearing has been scheduled for a 16-year-old National City girl who allegedly placed her newborn baby in a dumpster. Juvenile Court referee Bruce Ferguson set the date during a preliminary hearing Monday, but he made no determination on whether the baby girl will be placed in a foster home when she is released from the hospital, said Mike Roddy, juvenile coordinator.

The 16-year-old, whose name is being withheld, was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted murder and released to the custody of her parents. On Thursday, police found the infant, believed to be only a few hours old, wrapped in plastic inside the dumpster. Roddy said most of the court’s findings on the teen-ager will be kept confidential because of her age and “the sensitive nature of this case.”
