Burroughs Misses a Field Goal Twice With No Time Remaining

Burroughs kicker Todd Pam missed two field-goal attempts with no time remaining and the Indians had to settle for a 14-14 tie against Crescenta Valley in a nonleague game Thursday night at Glendale High.

Pam missed a 37-yard attempt as time expired, but got another chance when Crescenta Valley’s Danny Esparza roughed the kicker. Esparza hurt his neck on the play and the game was delayed for 13 minutes until he was carried off the field in an ambulance.

Another penalty gave Pam a shot at a 22-yard attempt, but the snap from Wes Bender bounced and Pam’s hurried attempt was blocked.

That play capped a forgettable night for Burroughs quarterback Jeff Barrett, who completed 9 of 18 passes for only 84 yards. He had no touchdowns and was intercepted twice.

Indian running back Danny Cusumano led all rushers with 194 yards on 23 carries, but was ejected with 1:33 left in the game for fighting.

Crescenta Valley (2-2-1) tied the game at 14-14 early in the third quarter when Cottie McMahon caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Steve Lightbourne.

Burroughs (4-0-1) got off to a quick start and scored on its first possession. On the second play of the game, Cusumano turned a sweep into a 68-yard gain to the Falcon 11. Cusumano’s run set up a one-yard scoring run by Doug Dragomer. Pam’s extra point gave Burroughs a 7-0 lead.

Crescenta Valley came right back and scored when defensive back Tim Richards picked off a Barrett pass and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown. Mike Muhlethaler’s kick made the score 7-7 with 5:18 left in the first quarter.

But that was the only score for Crescenta Valley in the first half. The Falcons managed just 17 yards total offense and quarterback Steve Lightbourne completed 1 of 3 passes for 3 yards.

With 1:30 remaining in the game, Burroughs got the ball on its own 37. Barrett hit wide receiver Pat Lynch with an 11-yard pass for a first down near midfield. One play later, Barrett and Lynch connected on a 19-yard pass play, which moved the ball to the 19 with one-second remaining in the game.

Pam’s first field-goal attempt from 37 yards sailed to the left of the goal post. After the roughing-the-kicker penalty, he set up for a 22-yard attempt but an offside penalty shortened his try to a 22-yard kick, which was blocked.
