Pele to Be Rose Parade Marshal

Soccer superstar Pele was named today as grand marshal of the 1987 Tournament of Roses Parade, which has the theme “World of Wonders.”

“There never has been so great a moment in my life,” the retired Brazilian athlete said at the Pasadena news conference at which his selection was announced. Tournament President Fred Soldwedel said Pele, considered the world’s greatest soccer player, was chosen because he is “a symbol of international good will.”
