Everything was going along as expected in a soccer game Friday between The Master’s College and Biola. But in the second half with no score, the Mustangs proceeded to score two goals against themselves --and lost. The first goal came when Tim Tallman accidentally kicked the ball into the Master’s goal. Mustang Dave Bradley then ran into his own goalkeeper, Allan Bowden, while he was trying to head the ball away and the ball bounced into goal.

“Otherwise, the game was fairly normal,” said Master’s Coach Mark Schubert.

Cal State Northridge, the top-ranked Division II volleyball team in the nation, placed 11th in the 16-team NIVT tournament at UCLA last week.

The Lady Matadors, the only Division II team in the tournament, lost two of three pool-play matches. They were 2-1 in the consolation bracket playoffs. CSUN’s two pool-play losses came against Brigham Young, the eventual tournament champion, and UC Santa Barbara, which finished fifth.

CSUN finished eighth in the tournament in 1985, but this year’s finish was as good, or better, according to Coach Walt Ker. After placing third in its pool, the best CSUN could have done was finish ninth this year. Last year, the team placed second in its pool, but finished last among the eight teams that qualified for the championship bracket.

The CSUN soccer team, ranked third in Division II, improved to 8-2-1 overall in opening its California Collegiate Athletic Assn. schedule with wins over eighth-ranked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Chapman last week.

John Tronson had a goal against San Luis Obispo, the 41st of his career, moving him within four of the school career record held by Jose Peres. Tronson has 98 points, 10 behind Peres’ record.

Against Chapman, goalkeeper Mike Caputo recorded his fourth shutout of the season. The junior from Camarillo was supposed to be a backup this season, but Phil Heaver, last season’s starter, was academically ineligible.

The Valley College basketball team was missing its practice gear when workouts began Wednesday, but at least that situation can be remedied. The Monarchs’ lack of experience, however, is a tougher problem.

Valley has only three sophomores. The rest of the team will be selected from a group of 13 freshmen.
