Sunset League : At Last, Barons Get Win : Ocean View Falls to Fountain Valley
Mike Milner, the Fountain Valley High School football coach, said he would prefer not to play his former assistant and current Ocean View coach Guy Carrozzo.
After Friday night, Milner might want to reconsider.
The Barons, behind a 21-point fourth quarter, won their first game of the season with a 35-14 victory over Ocean View at Huntington Beach’s Shue Field.
“I’m particularly glad this game’s over,” Milner said. “It was a real obstacle tonight because our friendship is so strong.”
Fountain Valley (1-0, 1-5) was almost too friendly, giving Ocean View (0-1, 2-4) two quick touchdowns in the third period to erase a 14-0 halftime lead. Both touchdowns came on a pair of blocked punts by Phil Bowen. Ocean View’s Victor Gutierrez recovered each to tie the game with 6:37 remaining in the period.
Sophomore quarterback David Henigan brought Fountain Valley down the field on the next possession, tossing an eight-yard touchdown pass to Rick Brand to make the score 21-14.
The Baron’s put the game away with 1:37 to play as Derek Tuescher scored on a four-yard run. In another Sunset League game:
Westminster 21, Huntington Beach 0--Quarterback Mike Austin passed for 190 yards and 2 first-half touchdowns as Westminster recorded its second straight shutout by defeating Huntington Beach.
The Lions (3-2-1,1-0) scored on catches by Benny Mendoza and Matt Jones to take a 14-0 halftime lead. The defense held the Oilers (2-4, 0-1) to minus six yards in the second half.
