The University of Nebraska football and women’s softball programs have been placed on probation for a maximum of one year for violations of NCAA extra-benefit rules.
During the probation, which began Oct. 14, the university will be required to conduct a review of its internal procedures to detect and prevent violations of the NCAA extra-benefit rule in the two sports.
The probation does not affect postseason play or television appearances for the football team.
The NCAA adopted action taken previously by the university against an assistant academic counselor, Marsha Shada, because of her involvement in violations regarding the football team.
The NCAA said the counselor helped a football player lease a 1985 Nissan 300ZX and then did not adequately inform the athletic department of the facts in the case. The player was running back Doug DuBose, whose college career recently was ended by a knee injury.
