The federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission fined the Sacramento Municipal Utility District $375,000 for alleged safety violations uncovered during the investigation of a 1985 incident at the Rancho Seco nuclear power plant. SMUD officials said they agreed with the NRC findings and probably would not protest the fine, although they have 30 days to decide. A protest would mean the utility could demand a public hearing on the penalty. SMUD spokesman Brad Thomas said the company is working to correct the problems at the plant, which has remained shut down since the Dec. 26. incident.
