Pitcher Ron Darling and second baseman Tim Teufel of the New York Mets will go to trial Jan. 26 on charges of assaulting two off-duty police officers at a Houston nightclub in July, State District Judge Joe Kegans ruled.

Dick DeGuerin, the players’ attorney, said a dismissal of charges--and perhaps even an apology from the police officers involved in the scuffle--would be more in order. Darling, 25, and Teufel, 28, were arrested July 19 outside the nightclub.
