Very Subtle Wins Sporting Lass Stakes

Trainer Mel Stute persuaded Carl Grinstead and Ben Rochelle, owners of the 2-year-old filly Very Subtle, to forgo Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes, and instead run Very Subtle in Thursday’s $62,950 Sporting Lass Stakes at Santa Anita.

So the owners forfeited the $10,000 pre-entry fee, but they earned $35,950 as Very Subtle, ridden by Pat Valenzuela, led the entire way and won the seven-furlong Sporting Lass by 3 3/4 lengths to remain unbeaten in three starts.

Footy, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, finished second, 1 lengths in front of Perchance To Dream, ridden by Ray Sibille.

Very Subtle was clocked in 1:22 3/5 for the seven furlongs and paid $5.20, $3 and $2.40.
