A Hawthorne police officer driving slowly on a search for an armed robbery suspect shot and killed a man who was pointing a toy gun at the officer’s unmarked car, authorities said. A civilian passenger warned Officer James Theriault, 29, of an unidentified man standing in an alley near 9914 S. Avalon Blvd. Theriault fired two shots through an open right-side window, while the passenger ducked. One armed robbery suspect was handcuffed in the back seat at the time and police were looking for his accomplice. The victim, who was hit in the chest, was taken to Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he died. The second armed robbery suspect was still at large Saturday.
