Jeff Chai, the 16-year-old Hawthorne High School student who collapsed with 32 seconds left in last Friday night’s football game against Culver City, died of heart disease of unknown origin, the L.A. County Coroner’s office has determined.
“There usually are not a lot of symptoms,” said Dean Gilmore, spokesman for the coroner’s office. “With other heart diseases, the person will get chest pains or anginas, but that wasn’t necessarily so this time. Death occurred before detection.”
