High humidity and drizzle helped 750 firefighters contain two wildfires on opposite sides of the Santa Lucia Mountains, forestry officials said. The blazes have seared 5,800 acres of steep terrain and at one time threatened a winery, secluded canyon homes and resorts. One 1,100-acre blaze 14 miles southeast of Carmel is 50% contained, and the 4,700-acre fire 30 miles northwest of Soledad is 80% contained. No serious injuries were reported. A Soledad rancher, cited as the person believed responsible for accidentally starting the Soledad fire while trying to get rid of unwanted brush, will be arraigned on misdemeanor charges in Salinas Municipal Court and could be billed for the hundreds of thousands of dollars it cost to fight the fire, California Department of Forestry officials said.
