A 5,325-acre brush fire 10 miles west of Soledad in central California was contained after a wind shift, but another fire 30 miles away in the Big Sur area that has burned more than 1,800 acres continued out of control. Firefighters said containment of that blaze will probably not occur until Tuesday night. About 670 firefighters, aided by helicopters and aircraft, were on the fire lines. A state Department of Forestry official meanwhile said that, so far, 1986 has not been as bad a fire year in California as 1985. The official listed 5,950 fires in California thus far in 1986, burning 43,630 acres and causing $16.6 million in damage. In 1985, by contrast, 6,464 fires were reported, burning 243,000 acres and causing more than $50 million in damage.
