Jim Criner, Iowa State football coach, may suspend himself this week and later resign, an Ames, Iowa, television station reported.

WOI said sources informed the station that Iowa State Athletic Director Max Urick told the school’s athletic council that Criner would suspend himself for the final two games of the season and would resign at the end of the year. WOI reported that sources said Urick told the council that Chuck Banker would be interim coach in the last two games.

WOI, which didn’t identify the sources, said it contacted Criner, who said he was not at the meeting and didn’t know anything about such a move. Criner told the station he plans on being on the field when Iowa State plays Kansas State on Saturday.

“I can tell you right now, he’s not going to resign,” Criner’s wife, Ann Marie, told the Associated Press by telephone.
