Edison High School routed Huntington Beach Thursday night, 42-7, in the Sunset League finale for both in Orange Coast College’s LeBard Stadium.

The Chargers’ victory was marred by what happened after the game. Coaches from both schools exchanged words and a Costa Mesa police officer had to break up a shoving match between an Edison assistant coach and a Huntington Beach fan.

Edison (4-1 in league, 8-2 overall) will open play in the Southern Section Big Five Conference playoffs. Huntington Beach ended the season at 1-4 and 3-7.

The Huntington Beach coaches were apparently upset that Edison was passing late in the fourth quarter of the lopsided game. Edison reserve quarterback David Sianez threw a 22-yard touchdown pass with five minutes left to give Edison a 42-7 lead.

Said Edison Coach Dave White: “We didn’t pass the ball in the first half and passed it only six times the whole game and they’re complaining.”

Edison led, 14-0, at halftime and was ahead, 28-0, after three quarters.
