Hall of Fame quarterback Bobby Layne drove himself to a hospital and underwent five hours of surgery to stop hemorrhaging in his lower esophagus, his wife said in Lubbock, Tex.
Carol Layne said her husband was doing well and that all his vital signs were stable. The hospital listed him in stable condition but said he was heavily sedated.
Layne, 59, entered a Pontiac, Mich., hospital last week with a similar problem but returned home to Lubbock Wednesday. He had gone to Michigan for a Detroit Lions reunion.
Friends said he went to his office as usual Thursday and Friday but woke up in pain about 3 a.m. Saturday and drove himself to Methodist Hospital, about a half-mile from his home.
