SMU Program’s Alleged Improprieties Result in Suspension and Resignation

Southern Methodist University officials said Tuesday that tight end Albert Reese will be suspended for a second game after more allegations that he received illegal benefits from a booster.

In another development, Mustang Club board member Frank Roby said he is resigning because of frustration over the “air of mystery” surrounding the workings of the SMU athletic department.

The Dallas Morning News reported Tuesday that Reese’s utility bills were paid by a company with ties to George Owen, a Dallas developer also accused of providing a free apartment for the senior player.

Reese was suspended from last Saturday’s game against Texas Tech because of allegations that Owen supplied him with a rent-free apartment. Owen denies the charge.

Reese, the Mustangs’ starting tight end, said he was deeply disappointed.

“I’m paying for the apartment, and I have a hard time understanding why I am not being allowed to play this weekend,” he said in a written statement. “But I understand SMU’s position, support their decision and look forward to the investigation of this issue to be completed.”
