Marwan Ass’ad, who led the Cal State Northridge soccer team out of oblivion into national prominence over the past four years, has been named the NCAA Far West Region coach of the year.

Ass’ad, who will lead his No. 1-ranked Matadors against defending national champion Seattle Pacific on Saturday, has a 62-13-10 record in his four years at Northridge. He has twice been named CCAA coach of the year and Saturday will mark his third appearance in the Division II playoffs.

The Matadors, who won their third straight California Collegiate Athletic Assn. conference title this year, are 15-2-2. They have won 27 of their past 29 games at North Campus Stadium.

“Of course I am pleased to be named,” Ass’ad said. “It’s good for our program. It helps the players and the program gain some recognition.”

His selection makes Ass’ad a strong candidate for national coach of the year. That selection will be made after the NCAA tournament ends.
