Glendale Will Face Riverside in Bid for Top Ranking

Glendale College will meet Riverside City College in the Pony Bowl at Orange Coast College Dec. 6 for the mythical state championship in community college football.

For Glendale’s Vaqueros, ranked No. 1 in California by the State J. C. Athletic Bureau, a consensus national championship is also within reach.

Glendale (10-0) is ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today and No. 2 by the J. C. Grid-Wire of Santa Ana.

“Our goal was to play the highest ranked team we could get matched with so that if we win, we can lay claim to the national championship,” Glendale Coach Jim Sartoris said. “That worked out to be Riverside.”

Riverside (8-1) winner of the Mission Conference, is ranked fifth in the state and ninth in the nation.

In the Los Angeles area’s other postseason game, College of the Desert will play host to Golden West in the Southern California Bowl, also Dec. 6.

Desert won the Southern California Conference title last Saturday with a 55-41 victory over Harbor. Golden West (8-2) received an at-large bid after finishing second in the South Coast Conference.

The state’s other bowl games:

Shrine Potato Bowl at Bakersfield College Dec. 6--Cerritos (6-2-1), which has clinched the championship in the South Coast Conference, will play Central Valley Conference winner Taft (6-3). It will be Taft’s eighth straight appearance in the game.

Peninsula Bowl at Foothill Stadium Dec. 6--Sacramento City College (9-0-1), winner of the Camino Norte Conference, plays De Anza (10-0), champion in the Coast Conference. The game will be one of only two in the nation matching match unbeaten teams.

San Diego National Football Foundation Community Bowl at Balboa Stadium Dec. 6--San Diego Mesa (5-2-2) and Southwestern (5-3-1), which tied, 22-22, last Saturday and shared second place in the Mission Conference, will meet in a rematch.

Elks Bowl at Merced College Dec. 6--Merced (8-2), runner-up in the Camino Norte Conference, will play unbeaten San Jose City College (10-0) winner of the Golden Gate Conference title and the state’s second-ranked team. It will be Merced’s fifth straight appearance in its own bowl.

Santa Cruz Lions Bowl at Cabrillo College Dec. 6--Shasta (7-3), co-champion of the Golden Valley, will meet Coast Conference runner-up Gavilan (8-2).

Community Bowl at Contra Costa College Dec. 5--Contra Costa (5-3) won the Bay Valley Conference championship and will play Butte (8-2) co-champion of the Golden Valley Conference.
