College Basketball Roundup : Maine’s 3-Point Barrage Stuns Michigan St., 84-81

Jeff Holmes came off the bench to hit seven three-point baskets and lead Maine to an 84-81 upset of Michigan State Thursday night at Bangor, Me.

Holmes’ 21 points enabled Maine (1-1) to erase a 15-point deficit in the second half. Matt Rossignol hit 5 of 9 from behind the line and scored 23 points.

The Bears trailed, 55-40, when Holmes made three straight three-pointers to cut the margin to eight points. Maine tied the game for the first time with 3:25 left, 74-74, on Holmes’ three-point bomb.

After Michigan State (2-2) moved ahead, 77-74, Jim Boylen made a basket, and Holmes hit a three-pointer to give Maine its first lead, 79-77, with 1:59 left. The Bears held on with Boylen’s basket and two free throws by Rossignol.

Darryl Johnson scored 23 points for Michigan State.

Kansas 82, Washington 68--Danny Manning scored 32 points and ignited a second-half surge that carried the sixth-ranked Jayhawks past the Huskies at Lawrence, Kan.

The Jayhawks (3-0) broke the game open with seven straight points, five by Manning, to take a 55-38 lead early in the second half.

Chris Welp scored 16 points for Washington (2-3).

USF 83, Pacific 75--Patrick Clardy and Rodney Tention each scored 19 points as the Dons won for the third time without a defeat by beating the Tigers at Stockton.

James Ray Richardson had 24 points for Pacific (1-2).

California 80, NC Charlotte 63--Leonard Taylor had 26 points and 11 rebounds as the Bears rolled past the 49ers at Berkeley.

Mike Milling scored 20 points for Charlotte (3-2).

Arizona 110, San Diego State 78--Sean Elliott scored 21 points, and reserve Tom Tolbert added 17 as the 20th-ranked Wildcats downed the Aztecs at San Diego.

The Wildcats (1-1) built a 62-42 halftime lead by making 71.9% of their shots (23 of 32). Josh Lowery scored 19 points for the Aztecs (1-1).

Illinois 92, Chicago State 78--Ken Norman scored 26 points for the ninth-ranked Illini, who scored the first 20 points and rolled to victory at Champaign, Ill.

Tony Wysinger added 17 points for Illinois (3-0). Shawn Bell had 12 for Chicago State (1-2).

Florida 110, SMU 70--Vernon Maxwell scored 24 points, and Chris Capers came off the bench to add 23 as the Gators ran past the Mustangs at Pensacola, Fla., for their third victory in four games.

Terry Williams scored 21 points for SMU (2-1).

New Mexico State 81, New Mexico 62--Kenny Travis scored 33 points as the Aggies coasted past the Lobos at Las Cruces, N.M., for their third victory in four games.

Kevin Scarborough scored 18 points for the Lobos (3-2).

Notre Dame 60, Cornell 56--Scott Hicks scored 16 points, including two baskets to put the Irish ahead to stay in the second half of a victory over the Big Red at South Bend, Ind.

David Rivers also had 16 points for the Irish (1-2), including two free throws with 25 seconds left to halt a comeback by Cornell (0-3).
