College Basketball Roundup : San Francisco Defeats California, 65-63

Forward Patrick Clardy hit a 10-foot jumper with nine seconds left Saturday night to lift San Francisco to a 65-63 victory over California at San Francisco.

The Dons, who trailed by seven points early in the second half, improved to 4-0, while the Bears dropped to 3-2.

California had a two-point lead with 2:25 left when a jumper by USF center Mark McCatherion tied the game.

USF’s Rodney Tention then stole a Chris Washington pass and made a layup to give the Dons a two-point lead with two minutes left.

Cal’s Kevin Johnson tied the game 63-63 with a driving jumper at 1:36.

Cal center Leonard Taylor, who led the Bears with 16 points, was fouled and missed his free throw opportunity with 1:16 to go.

With 22 seconds left, Johnson’s driving layup was nullified when he was called for charging. Following a Cal timeout, USF set up its final shot and Clardy came through to cap a game-high 19-point performance.

Stanford 99, Alabama Birmingham 80--Todd Lichti and reserve Bryan McSweeney each scored 16 points, and center Howard Wright added 15 as Stanford won the championship of the Apple Invitational tournament at Stanford.

Alabama Birmingham’s Tracy Foster led all scorers with 24 points, including three three-point field goals.

Stanford (3-2) shot 62%, while Alabama-Birmingham (2-2) shot only 43%.

Arkansas 103, Kansas 86-- Junior college transfer Tim Scott scored 34 points as the Razorbacks (3-0) upset the sixth-ranked Jayhawks (2-1) at Fayetteville, Ark.

All-American Danny Manning, who led Kansas with 26 points, fouled out in the final seconds. He picked up his fourth foul with 8:04 remaining and the score tied at 68-68. He scored only four points in the final 7 1/2 minutes. For the game, he made only 9 of 26 field goal attempts.

Arkansas led, 83-76, with 4:40 left when William Mills scored off a rebound, Scott dunked after a midcourt steal and then hit two three-point jumpers from 21 feet for a 91-77 lead.

Indiana 71, Kentucky 66--Steve Alford, Daryl Thomas and Joe Hillman scored two free throws apiece in the final 42 seconds as the third-ranked Hoosiers (3-0) held off the 13th-ranked Wildcats (2-1) at Bloomington, Ind.

The Hoosiers never trailed in the second half but saw an eight-point lead cut to one on the shooting of Kentucky freshman Rex Chapman, who finished with a season-high 26 points.

Alford had 26 points, including a pair of first-half three-pointers as Indiana took a 34-30 halftime lead. Kentucky got 10 points apiece from Irving Thomas and Derrick Miller.

Alford sat out last year’s five-point loss at Kentucky because of an NCAA-ordered suspension for posing for a charity calendar.

Said Indiana Coach Bobby Knight: “Everybody did a great job of playing off of Steve. I’m not sure why we’re rated and I watch us in practice every day.”

Said Kentucky Coach Eddie Sutton: “When you have to spend yourself covering Alford on defense, it’s bound to affect your offense. Alford plays as well away from the basketball as anyone I’ve seen in a long time.”

Illinois 99, Pittsburgh 97--Doug Altenberger scored 26 points, including six three-pointers, and Ken Norman added 24 points as the ninth-ranked Illini held on after building a 19-point lead against the 12th-ranked Panthers at Pittsburgh.

Curtis Aiken had a game-high 29 points for Pitt, including 13 in the final 1:23 of the game. Charles Smith had 27 points for the Panthers (2-1).

Tony Wysinger had 14 points and a school record 16 assists for the Illini (4-0).

North Carolina 122, Miami 77--Joe Wolf scored 23 points and Ranzino Smith added 21 for the top-ranked Tar Heels who outrebounded the Hurricanes, 50-30, at Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina (4-1) set a school record with 72 points in the first half. The old record was 70 against Rice in 1972.

Miami (1-2) was led by Dennis Brown with 20 points, followed by Tim Dawson with 17.

St. John’s 102, Wagner 69--Willie Glass had 30 points and 15 rebounds as the Redmen (4-0) scored their 26th straight home court victory at Alumni Hall in New York.

Terrance Bailey of Wagner (2-1), last season’s NCAA scoring leader, had 29 points.

Notre Dame 62, BYU 46--David Rivers proved he has recovered from injuries sustained in an auto accident three months ago by scoring 22 points for the Irish (2-2) at South Bend, Ind.

BYU (1-2), which had scored over 100 points in its first two games, was held to only 17 points in the first half as the Irish took a 27-17 lead.

“David Rivers is back. That’s the Rivers we know,” Irish Coach Digger Phelps said. “He took control of the game when it counted.”

Florida State 72, Alabama 71--Raleigh Choice, a 6-10 senior who had just been inserted into the game, hit a five-foot jumper with two seconds left to give the Seminoles the win over the eighth-ranked Crimson Tide at Tallahassee, Fla.

Pee Wee Barber and LaRae Davis both scored 20 points, including four three-pointers each, for the Seminoles (3-0).

Jim Farmer scored 26 points and Derrick McKee added 14 for Alabama (2-1).

Duke 78, Vanderbilt 66--Kevin Strickland scored 18 points as the Blue Devils (3-1) handed the Commodores (4-1) their first loss of the season at Durham, N.C.

Duke led, 40-29, at halftime and was ahead, 60-33, with 13:38 left in the game.

Will Perdue led Vanderbilt with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

North Carolina State 96, Western Carolina 75--Bennie Bolton scored 23 points and Charles Shackleford had 18 points and 9 rebounds for the 18th-ranked Wolfpack at Cullowhee, N.C.

The Wolfpack (5-1) jumped out to a 48-37 halftime lead before the Catamounts (0-2) narrowed the gap to 63-60 with 8:36 left on a layup by Leroy Gasque, who scored a game-high 27 points.

Utah 68, Arizona 67--Utah’s Jimmy Madison scored the winning basket with six seconds left as the Utes came from 13 points back in the second half to stun the 20th-ranked Wildcats at Tucson.

Madison pulled down an offensive rebound and shot a 10-foot jumper from the baseline. It bounced straight up and dropped back through the basket.

Arizona’s Sean Elliott then hit a 20-footer, but the officials ruled he released the shot after the buzzer sounded.

Anthony Cook of Arizona paced all scorers with 23 points, while Mitch Smith led the Utes with 20.

Villanova 80, St. Francis (Pa.) 64--Harold Jensen scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half as the Wildcats (4-1) breezed to victory after taking a 43-28 halftime lead at Villanova, Pa.

Bob Gullickson scored 23 points for St. Francis (1-2).

Oklahoma 101, Texas Arlington 76--Tim McCalister and Harvey Grant each scored 22 points and Stacey King had 18 points and 13 rebounds as the Sooners (3-1) blew the game open with a 15-1 spurt after taking a 33-27 halftime lead over the Mavericks (1-3) at Norman, Okla.

Houston 83, Arizona State 66--Greg Anderson, 6-10 senior forward, tied a tournament record with 41 points and had 12 rebounds as the Cougars (4-0) won the Kactus Klassic at Tempe, Ariz.

In the second half, Anderson had nine points in a 2:13 span to spark a 15-3 run and give Houston a 69-53 lead with 8:20 remaining.

Anderson tied the record set by Iowa State’s Don Smith against USC in 1966 when the tournament was known as the Sun Devil Classic.

Steve Beck and Arthur Thomas each scored 16 points for the Sun Devils (1-1).

Syracuse 94, Northeastern 74--Howard Triche scored a career-high 31 points for the Orangemen (4-0) who took command with an 18-2 run for a 79-60 lead with 5:43 left in the Carrier tournament at Syracuse, N.Y.

Reggie Lewis scored 27 points for Northeastern (4-2).
