NBA Roundup : Jordan Gets 41 Points, and Bulls Snap Bucks’ Home Winning Streak

Share

Michael Jordan scored 41 points Friday night at Milwaukee to lead the Chicago Bulls to a surprising 106-93 victory and snap the Bucks’ nine-game home winning streak.

It was the ninth consecutive game--eight on the road--in which the sharpshooting guard has scored at least 40 points. In 1961-62, when he averaged 50.4 points a game, Wilt Chamberlain had 40 or more points in 14 consecutive games.

In this victory, which evened the Bulls’ record at 10-10, Jordan had considerable help from Charles Oakley, who had 18 points and 16 rebounds.

The Bucks, who trounced the Lakers Wednesday night, built a 61-56 lead midway through the third quarter, but Jordan led a 14-3 surge that put Chicago ahead to stay.

“Michael’s talents take the pressure off the rest of our team,” Coach Doug Collins said. “We emphasize, ‘Don’t watch Michael. Take advantage of the fact three men run at him. Look for a pass. Look for a rebound. Score while they’re double- and triple-teaming him.’

“A win like this is a tonic for us. We’ve played good ball the last six games and had only one win to show for it.”

Jordan, who has often taken 40 or more shots, has put up only 49 in the last two games--but has made 31 of them. He was 16 for 24 against the Bucks.

The Bucks shot only 43.7%.

Atlanta 130, Sacramento 120--Last season, when the Hawks needed big point totals from him every night, Dominique Wilkins responded by winning the scoring title.

As the Hawks have matured into an outstanding team, Wilkins can pick his spots for big numbers. When Michael Jordan came to Atlanta, Wilkins went on a binge, scoring 57 points.

Then there was this game at Atlanta. The Kings, who were supposed to be easy, were staying right with the Hawks until Wilkins scored 15 points in the fourth quarter.

The Kings trailed, 105-102, with nine minutes remaining. Wilkins scored 7 of the points in an 11-0 spurt that broke the game open.

New Jersey 123, Philadelphia 90--The long-suffering, injury-plagued Nets finally enjoyed a blowout at East Rutherford, N.J.

After falling behind, 13-2, in the opening minutes, the Nets, although missing regulars Otis Birdsong, Darryl Dawkins and Orlando Woolridge, turned the game around in a hurry. They held the 76ers to one field goal in the second quarter and breezed to their fourth win in 21 games.

Tony Brown, fresh from two seasons in the Continental Basketball Assn., led the Nets with 22 points.

Washington 116, Detroit 115--Moses Malone grabbed an offensive rebound, spun outside and hit a fallaway 12-footer with two seconds left at Pontiac, Mich., to give the Bullets the victory.

Joe Dumars shot a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer, but it bounced off the rim.

Malone had 27 points and 17 rebounds.

Denver 128, Phoenix 116--Alex English scored 31 points, and Danny Schayes came off the bench to score 21 at Denver to help the Nuggets end a three-game losing streak.

Neither team had more than a four-point lead in a hotly contested first half, and the Suns led, 77-76, early in the third period. But Schayes tied it with a free throw, and English and Lafayette Lever hit jumpers to give Denver the lead for good.
