Carson-Newman’s Pat Johnson returned a punt 80 yards for one touchdown, and tailback Kenneth Tyson dove 1 yard for another as the Eagles beat Cameron, 17-0, Saturday for the NAIA Division I national football championship.
Louis Reveiz added a 45-yard field goal in the second half as Carson-Newman, of Jefferson City, Tenn., won its third National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics championship in four years.
Cameron, of Lawton, Okla., was held to 198 yards on offense and gave up four fumbles as the Aggies finished with an 11-2-1 record. Carson-Newman finished 12-1, a school record for wins.
In the first half, Cameron’s Charles Washington intercepted a pass by quarterback Edwin Lowery and returned it to the Eagles’ 17, but the Aggies fumbled three plays later and missed a scoring chance on their deepest penetration of the day.
