Car Rams Drunk-Driving Display; Man Held
A man has been arrested for investigation of drunk driving after his van smashed into a storefront window display set up by Students Against Driving Drunk, police said.
A man identified as Raymond Barrientos Jr. on Wednesday drove across a center divider, over a sidewalk and into the storefront that held the display, according to Police Cmdr. Vern Gardner.
Barrientos, 35, was pinned behind the wheel and had to be freed by firefighters, Fire Capt. Hal Lawrence said.
Barrientos was hospitalized in stable condition for cuts on his forehead and a puncture wound in his fractured left leg.
“Even if I’d gone out and hired a publicity agent from Hollywood, he couldn’t have done a better job,” said Jim Maya, faculty adviser to Students Against Driving Drunk at Gilroy High School.
The display was intended to raise awareness of the hazards of drunk driving and to generate funds to help support the group, Maya said.
Barrientos, arrested for investigation of drunk driving, will be charged formally when he leaves the hospital, Gardner said.
