Boys’ Roundup : University Keeps It Close for 3 Quarters, but El Toro Still Wins

Ninth-ranked University High School stayed with the No. 7 El Toro for three quarters Saturday night, but the Chargers then outscored the Trojans, 31-18, in the final period to win, 92-81, to advance to the semifinals of the Coast Christmas Tournament at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa.

The Trojans led, 46-44, at halftime and, 63-61, after three quarters until junior center Cory Wayland scored 10 of his game-high 31 to spark El Toro.

Junior forward Eric Speaker scored 8 points and junior guard Bret Johnson scored 6 points in the fourth quarter for the Chargers, and finished the game with 21 points each.

With the victory El Toro advances to one semifinal against Irvine 8 p.m. Monday.

University was led by center Steve Stolzoff, who scored 25 points. Teammate Eric Olin scored 22 points.

University plays Estancia in the fifth-place semifinal at 4:20 p.m. Monday.

In other tournament games:

Huntington Beach 78, Iolani 40--Senior forward Steve Brazzel scored 35 points in three quarters to lead the Oilers. Brazzel scored 20 points in the the first half and 15 in the third quarter before leaving the game.

The Oilers play Long Beach Jordan at 11:20 a.m. Monday in the consolation quarterfinals.

Hoover 55, Laguna Hills 49--Guard Joe Valasques scored 21 points to lead the Tornados into the one consolation semifinal against Cypress.

Sean Hardy and Chris Sheff scored 12 points each and Mike Smedes for the Hawks, who were eliminated by the loss.

Long Beach Jordan 63, Sonora 40--Tyrone Julks scored 15 points for the Cougars as they advanced to a consolation semifinal against Huntington Beach.

David Morris and Geoff Crow scored 12 each for the Raiders.

Mission Viejo 74, Fontana 59--Jeff Herdman scored 28 points and Todd Matthews added 20 to lead the Diablos in a championship quarterfinal game. Mission Viejo (7-2) outrebounded Fontana (9-2), 41-24.

Mike Flynn led the Steelers with 26 and Sean Rooks added 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Cypress 67, Santa Ana Valley 58--Frantz Reyes scored 19 points and had 16 rebounds for the Centurions (3-6) in a consolation quarterfinal game. Matt Civitelli added 17 and Greg Bedford had 14 for Cypress.

Brett Beale of Santa Ana Valley led all scorers with 24 and Anthony Phillips had 17.

Irvine 67, Estancia 63--The Vaqueros advanced to Monday night’s semifinal game at 8 against El Toro with the win over host Estancia. The Eagles fall into one fifth-place semifinal game against University at 4:20 Monday afternoon.

Edison 69, Corona del Mar 65--The win sends the Chargers into one semifinal against Mission Viejo at 6:10 Monday evening. The Sea Kings fall into the fifth-place bracket and play Fontana at 2:40 Monday afternoon.

In the Brea-Olinda Tournament:

El Dorado 76, La Habra 65--Senior forward Brian Cardenas scored 18 and senior guard scored Eric Glade 15 for the Golden Hawks (3-5).

Chris Facione had nine rebounds and five points for El Dorado which plays Whittier Christian one semifinal Monday.

In the Fiesta Bowl Tournament:

Tustin 61, Brophy Prep 59--Rog Middleton had 36 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Tillers in a semifinal game at Phoenix. Tustin is 10-1.

In the San Diego Kiwanis Tournament:

Los Alamitos 70, La Jolla 48--Forward Mo Warner scored 20 points, had 11 rebounds and had 4 steals to lead the Griffins to an easy victory over La Jolla for the limited division tournament championship.

Warner, the tournament’s most valuable player, helped the Griffins (9-3) build a 36-20 halftime lead. Guard Ryan Blossey added 16 for Los Alamitos, and Matt Bertaux led La Jolla with 14.

In the Katella Tournament:

Los Amigos 56, Servite 54--Gene Altimirano scored 16 points and Walter Skipps had 11 as the Lobos advanced into the championship semifinals with the victory. Shawn Sullivan led Servite with 18 points and Tony Smalley added 12.

Los Amigos plays Millikan at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Servite will meet Centennial at 5 p.m. Monday.
