A Legacy of Love

Memorial services were held last weekend for Annie Mae Tripp, 73, of Santa Ana. Mrs. Tripp was not well-known in Orange County social circles. Her name didn’t regularly appear in the newspapers. We doubt that many, if any, public officials knew her. But they should have. In her own quiet and unceremonious way, she served her community well.

Mrs. Tripp had devoted her life to feeding Orange County’s hungry residents. She didn’t just make a donation. She got personally involved. Mrs. Tripp started her own soup kitchen, feeding about 10 people every day out of the garage at her home. Word spread and more people came. She eventually had to move to larger quarters, finally settling in at the Southwest Community Center, where for nearly two decades she served food--along with generous portions of loving kindness.

Annie Mae Tripp’s obituary listed as survivors six sons, two adopted daughters, 45 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. It must also include the countless hungry people she fed, and a grateful community.
