Curry Seems to Be Alabama’s Pick
Georgia Tech Coach Bill Curry declined to say Saturday whether he has agreed to become the football coach at Alabama, but a Crimson Tide player said he was told by university officials that Curry has accepted the job.
Joab Thomas, the school’s president, has called a news conference today at the Tuscaloosa, Ala., campus.
“I can’t say who, but somebody from the school called me and told me Bill Curry is our new coach,” Alabama tailback Gene Jelks said.
Curry and Louisville’s Howard Schnellenberger were considered the leading candidates for the job after Florida State’s Bobby Bowden changed his mind and withdrew from consideration Friday.
Curry has compiled a 23-41-2 record in six years at Georgia Tech.
Meanwhile, Duke Coach Steve Sloan, a former Alabama quarterback who has interviewed for the athletic director’s job at his alma mater, met with his coaching staff late Saturday afternoon.
Duke Athletic Director Tom Butters said “it’s pretty well known that he’s accepted” the job of athletic director at Alabama.
