The Fiesta Bowl’s TV Ratings Are Lower Than 3 NFL Games
The Sunkist Fiesta Bowl, as expected, drew the highest television rating of any of the college bowl games, but three of the four weekend NFL playoff games fared better.
The national Nielsen rating for the Fiesta Bowl, which featured top-ranked Miami and No. 2 Penn State, was a 25.1. The L.A. rating was 21.0
Other national ratings were not available Monday, but the overnight averages for the nation’s 13 largest markets included a 17.2 for the Rose Bowl, down from last year’s overnight of 20.7. The L.A. rating was 30.9, compared to last season’s 32.1 for the UCLA-Iowa game.
The 13-market overnight rating was 16.0 for the Orange Bowl, down from 21.3. Other overnights: Cotton, 14.6; Florida Citrus, 9.3, and Sugar, 9.1, all significantly higher than the previous year.
The NFL overnights: New York Jets-Cleveland, 22.4; Washington-Chicago, 27.4; San Francisco-New York Giants, 27.3, and New England-Denver, 29.2.
